Pioneers in Energy

Benjamin Franklin - 1706-1790
Benjamin Franklin was a man of many talents and interests.
His natural curiosity about things and the way they work made him try to
find ways to make them work better.
Ben did not "invent" electricity.
He did, however, invent the lightning rod which
protected buildings and ships from lightning damage.

Rudolpf Diesel - 1858-1913
Diesel put much effort into a design for an expansion engine that ran on ammonia.
Ammonia was also the working fluid in the refrigerator.
He later found that air, when highly compressed, could aid in running an engine.

Thomas Edison - 1847-1931
Edison's major innovation was the first industrial research lab,
which was built in Menlo Park, New Jersey.
It was the first institution set up with the specific purpose of
producing constant technological innovation and improvement.
Edison did not invent the first electric light bulb,
but instead invented the first commercially practical incandescent light.

Henry Ford - 1863-1947

Albert Einstein - 1879 - 1955
Einstein was a German-born theoretical physicist who is widely
considered one of the greatest physicists of all time.
While best known for the theory of relativity
(and specifically mass-energy equivalence, E=mc2),
he was awarded the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics for his 1905
(Annus Mirabilis) explanation of the photoelectric effect and "for his services to Theoretical Physics".
